Skora Footwear

Skora is a new running company that have been around for about three to four years now. Although being a zero drop shoe, it isn’t exactly as ultra minimal as some other shoes are out there. So for the barefoot fans, Skora is a good cushioning option for a long race but if you were keen on a super barefoot feel than it may not be the one you are after. Either way, here’s a few details about Skora and maybe that way you can make the decision for yourself.

Run Real is more than a statement, it is a way of conducting business. They believe that runners are smarter than most brands give them credit for. They are free-thinking and challenge conventional wisdom. They believe in common sense, rational principles and challenging the status-quo.

SKORA Running Video from SKORA INC. on Vimeo.

At SKORA they view Real Running as running how nature intended – efficient, effective and with ease. As the foot strikes the ground, contact is made in the middle of the foot, not at the heel. Running with a whole-foot gait results in less impact energy and force shock transmitted through the body than compared to the heel strike gait favored by conventional running shoes (built with large amounts of cushioning, support and a thicker heel).

For years, they have been sold technology that is supposed to make the running process better than nature has intended. Despite the millions of marketing dollars spent, and countless studies, there has yet to be any conclusive proof that bags of air, gel, shock absorbers or fancy support systems work or decrease instance of injury. In fact, there are many studies that show the opposite.

There is indeed now a movement towards products that encourage more natural running form. Some call it “barefoot”, “minimal” or “natural” or “free”.

If you look closely however, you will find most of these products are little different than the running shoes built and sold with “advanced technical features” for years. “Natural” shoes that have thick heels and TPU shanks? Proprietary technical cushioning systems? Doesn’t sound so “natural”, does it?

At SKORA, they reject the terms “minimal”, “natural”, or “barefoot-style” when it comes to running. They believe there is only one way to run that respects our bodies — simply put, it is Real Running. Nothing more, nothing less.

Run Real.

“Running ability is programmed into the human DNA. For millions of years, we have run from danger and towards the things we seek. As humans, we innately know how to run — we Run Real.”

Real Running is not a new program, proprietary technique, or something they invented. Real Running is their honest, open solution to the confusion over terms like “barefoot”, “minimal”, “natural” and “free” styles of running.

At SKORA, they look at things differently. They believe that running shoes should be built to encourage running performance that is as biomechanically correct as possible, with minimal interference. SKORA’s footwear lets people run naturally. Run Real is their philosophy and they stand by it.

SKORA is a new company with a new vision and philosophy. This means that they can do things differently and are not in a position of trying to follow all the marketing and design practices that are the foundation of conventional athletic brands and products.

Run Real is more than a statement, it is a way of conducting business. They believe that runners are smarter than most brands give them credit for. They are free-thinking and challenge conventional wisdom. They believe in common sense, rational principles and challenging the status-quo.

MovNat – lots of interest for this new CrossFit / Parkour fitness movement

There is growing interest here in Australia for MovNat – described as “a physical education & fitness system based on training the full range of our natural human movement abilities”

Max from BarefootInc first mentioned it to me in a discussion we had about some of the new training techniques that people are getting into, that really drive home the benefits of natural movement and specifically, natural running. It also loops in the well known and popular Paleo diet.

You can see that lots of people in the images of MovNat are either barefoot or in FiveFingers, Inov8 or some sort of minimal running shoe.

It doesn’t appear that any local instructors are certified in MovNat, but it seems that a few are looking to bring certified teachings here soon.

We at Adventure Megastore will be keeping a close eye on MovNat – it looks like it is a great new fitness movement.

Get the comfort of sandals without the mangled toes when you wear the Keen Newport Sandals.

The Newport is the foundation of the Keen Footwear line. Designed to perform in adverse conditions the razor sipped outsole and 3mm lugs provide excellent traction. A true hybrid, the waterproof uppers withstand the abuse of saltwater and dirt while providing supple comfort and a stylish look. Features a Metatomical low durometer EVA molded footbed, Compression molded EVA Midsole, Patented toe protection, Multi directional lug pattern with razor siping, Secure fit strap design, Washable waterproof leather upper, AEGIS Microbe Shield treated SBR lining.

The Newport’s soles are made from a grippy, non-marking rubber that prevents you from slipping and falling overboard, or being thrown by black-mark-addled boat owners. The Newport’s waterproof leather upper and anatomical last make it comfortable enough for extended wear on long blue water voyages, or just walking around town.

Polartec fabrics—the most advanced performance textiles available today

Polartec LLC, the exclusive company that manufactures Polartec fleece, produces an entire family of Polartec fabrics that is designed as the ultimate climate control. There are three layers that each one of the fabrics fits into; the inner or thermal layer (the closest to your body), the middle layer, and the outer layer.

The first thing to remember about Polartec is that it breathes. This is important, because as you perspire, your sweat is wicked away from your body. So you have dry warmth surrounding you rather than cold perspiration that will chill you. Next, the fibers of this polyester fabric trap the heat you produce, therefore keeping your temperature regulated.

The North Face Polartec Salathe Jacket

Polartec Classic fabrics are the reference standard for lightweight warmth and breathability. This is the original fleece offering unparalleled quality and durability. Polartec Classic fabrics have been the primary insulation layer of choice among experienced outdoor enthusiasts for nearly three decades.

These fabrics are available in a range of weights to provide the right level of insulation for most outdoor activities. Polartec Classic 100 weight fabrics are the lightest and are excellent for a warm first layer or lightweight sweater, ideal for biking, trail running, and backpacking (like The North Face Salathe Jacket and The North Face TKA 100 Microvelour). Polartec Classic 300 weight fabrics are the heaviest and provide a warm thermal layer for very cold outdoor activities, such as wintertime adventures. Halfway in between are Polartec Classic 200 weight fabrics, providing outstanding warmth and versatility.

Is This the End of Bear Grylls?

We were as surprised as anyone to hear that Bear Grylls has been dropped by The Discovery Channel over a contact issue. The adventurer’s upcoming season of Man Vs Wild will be the last. The star has become a household name for his daring, cutting-edge documentaries. He also is a fan of barefoot brand Inov-8. Check out the picture of him wearing F-Lite 195’s.

Grylls in Inov-8's

Bear posted a really inspriring comment on Twitter yesterday to thank his fans for their support. “Thank you fans for your support!! Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. #TEAM BG”. Good on him for contining to go against the conventional. Let’s hope he can continue to break boundaries in the wild and that he will be back filming his cutting-edge documentaries for us all to enjoy very soon.

Summer Family Camping coming up!!

Wow, spring has definitely arrived here in Sydney.

I got home tonight and the kids were begging us to go camping.. So, time to pull out the old Blackwolf Turbo tent (that has been superb for the past 4 years) and plan a short camping trip somewhere nearby. I need to upgrade some sleeping bags for my youngest – there are some cool new kids sleeping bags out from both Roman Camping and Blackwolf.

As far as places to go, we are big fans of Cattai National Park – a quiet campsite along the banks of the Hawkesbury River. Its got a few secluded spots for those looking for some privacy and plenty of nice areas for groups too..

Happy for suggestions – somewhere close to Sydney CBD..?

Skora – coming soon?

There is a bit of press out there on the web (blogs, twitter, facebook) on the new Skora running shoes. I think the team over there at Skora have placed some clever PR into cyberspace that is being picked up.

We love the Skora history.. starting with the sock (literally a sock) and building on that with plastic paint (I think that’s the story, if I remember correctly).

The shoes look great – and the price is reasonable for a pair (circa $125). Let’s hope we can get some out here to OZ..
